Ulsan City, a leading hub of hydrogen technology in South Korea, has achieved Concept Approval (AIP) certification for a small hydrogen ship from the Korean Register of Shipping.

This milestone marks a significant step towards the commercialization of hydrogen-powered vessels and reinforces Ulsan City’s position as a pioneer in eco-friendly maritime solutions. The approval validates the technical suitability and safety of hydrogen ships, opening new possibilities for carbon-free shipping.

On the 13th, Ulsan City conducted a Concept Approval ceremony at the Ulsan Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demonstration Center in collaboration with the Korea Register of Shipping, the University of Ulsan, Seho Marine Solutions Co., Ltd., and the Korea Institute of Shipbuilding and Marine Equipment. The certification signifies an initial approval in principle for concept designs that have not yet been manufactured, allowing for the verification of safety and performance aspects.

The certified small hydrogen ship is a 40-seat, 350kW vessel currently undergoing technology development and demonstration projects at the University of Ulsan with support from the Ministry of Industry and Ulsan City. The ship utilizes hydrogen as fuel to generate electricity, offering a sustainable and clean power source for propulsion.

Ulsan City’s receipt of Concept Approval (AIP) certification signifies its official recognition as a leader in hydrogen ship technology and related innovations. By proactively investing in eco-friendly ships and hydrogen-related technologies, Ulsan City is taking significant strides towards achieving its goal of carbon-free shipping and contributing to a greener maritime industry.

To comply with carbon regulations and promote sustainability, Ulsan City is actively replacing existing and future ships with eco-friendly alternatives. By securing expertise in hydrogen-fueled eco-friendly ships and supporting technology development, the city aims to accelerate the realization of carbon-free ships, reducing emissions and environmental impact.

The University of Ulsan is overseeing the small hydrogen-powered ship technology development and demonstration project. With a total project cost of 29.6 billion won (18.4 billion won from the government, 6 billion won from the city, and 5.2 billion won from private investment), the project aims to develop a commercially viable 40-seater small hydrogen-powered ship by 2026.
