Redexis, in collaboration with Somacyl, has formed H2 Duero, a company focused on operating the first green hydrogen production plant in the Castilla y León region.

This plant, with a capacity of 2.5 MW, will contribute to decarbonization efforts and provide renewable hydrogen for industrial and mobility applications.

Redexis holds 80 percent of H2 Duero’s capital, while Somacyl owns the remaining 20 percent. The green hydrogen production plant, located in Garray, will have the capability to produce up to 300 tons of green hydrogen annually. The hydrogen can be utilized in various sectors and transported through a dedicated hydrogen pipeline.

The plant will be powered by green electricity generation, ensuring a renewable energy source for the electrolysis process. Additionally, a storage system with a capacity of 150 cubic meters will be installed, enabling efficient hydrogen storage.

The establishment of this green hydrogen production plant marks a significant step in Castilla y León’s decarbonization efforts. The plant has the potential to reduce up to 2,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year, contributing to a cleaner and greener future for the region.

The production plant, situated on a 3,000-square-meter plot, will not only house the electrolyzer and water storage tanks but also provide hydrogen services to the Garray Environmental Business Park. The site will feature auxiliary facilities for monitoring, control, air conditioning, lighting, and security.

The project has obtained environmental authorization from the Ministry of the Environment, Housing, and Territorial Planning. This authorization ensures compliance with regulations related to air and noise pollution prevention, waste management, contaminated soils, and groundwater protection.

Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources. It offers numerous advantages as a clean energy carrier, including its renewable nature, storage capacity, transportability, and applicability in commercial, industrial, and mobility sectors.
