Tokyo Gas Co. has made a significant move towards decarbonization by selecting Mitsubishi Power to build three gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plants with a total output of 650 MW in Sodegaura City, Chiba Prefecture.

This milestone project represents a joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Mitsubishi Electric Corp., with MHI supplying gas turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators, and flue gas desulfurization systems, and Mitsubishi Electric providing generators and electrical products. The collaboration aims to deliver a cutting-edge high-efficiency gas turbine combined cycle power generation system capable of co-firing hydrogen, paving the way for the future use of hydrogen and carbon neutrality.

The key objective of this ambitious project is to introduce a state-of-the-art high-efficiency gas turbine combined cycle power generation system with a capacity of 1.95 million kW, capable of co-firing hydrogen. The incorporation of hydrogen co-firing technology marks a crucial step towards decarbonization and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The plant will be designed to be converted to 100% hydrogen firing with minimal rebuilding, showcasing Tokyo Gas Co.’s commitment to exploring all options, including e-methane and carbon capture and storage (CCS), in its pursuit of reliable and sustainable power supplies.

With the world’s attention increasingly focused on transitioning to green and renewable energy sources, hydrogen power generation holds immense potential in achieving zero-carbon energy. Mitsubishi Power’s involvement in this project positions it as a global pioneer in hydrogen power generation, contributing significantly to the advancement of reliable and efficient power supplies. The project’s vision of co-firing hydrogen is a testament to the potential of hydrogen as a clean and versatile fuel for the future.

As Japan and other nations move towards decarbonization and embrace hydrogen as a key solution, the successful implementation of this project will not only address power supply reliability issues but also serve as a model for other countries to follow. Mitsubishi Power’s ongoing development of various technologies to support reliable power supplies aligns with the global shift towards sustainable energy solutions.

Tokyo Gas Co.’s partnership with Mitsubishi Power is a pivotal step towards achieving decarbonization and embracing hydrogen power generation. The introduction of a state-of-the-art gas turbine combined cycle system capable of co-firing hydrogen will drive the world closer to carbon neutrality and open up new opportunities for the global energy landscape. As Mitsubishi Power leads the charge in hydrogen power generation, it sets an example for other nations to explore the potential of hydrogen as a clean and sustainable energy source. With concerted efforts and innovative technologies, the vision of zero-carbon energy may soon become a reality, ushering in a new era of environmentally friendly power generation for generations to come.
