Widespread support for offshore wind energy is coming from every demographics group across the U.S.
According to the survey conducted by Public Opinion Strategies, and released by American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), over 80 percent of voters favor offshore wind energy.
Wind energy is viewed as a clean, renewable, affordable power source that reduces carbon emission, while providing power to American households.
“Voters are strongly in favor of offshore wind energy, regardless of ideology or party affiliation. Republicans and Democrats alike see offshore wind as playing a key role in the nation’s future energy portfolio, providing tremendous economic and environmental benefits and helping stabilize the cost of electricity,” said AWEA CEO Tom Kiernan.
Both Democrats and Republicans prefer wind energy instead of coal, nuclear, or even natural gas.
Voters also believe that oil, natural gas, and offshore wind play an important role in the country’s economy, with more than half of Republican voters saying the U.S. should put in more effort in producing energy from both wind and solar.
“Consumers clearly see that offshore wind provides significant environmental benefits and will serve as a real economic game-changer in the coming years, helping the nation recover and adding family-supporting jobs where they’re needed most at the local level following the coronavirus pandemic,” added Kiernan.
The offshore wind industry possesses a power potential of more than 2,000 gigawatts, nearly double the nation’s current electricity use.
