ACWA Power Joins Forces with Port of Amsterdam on Green Hydrogen Trade Route Creation

ACWA Power, a global leader in water desalination and a pioneer in clean energy, has joined hands with key partners to explore the feasibility of a green hydrogen export corridor. This ambitious project aims to connect ACWA Power’s hydrogen production sites with the Port of Amsterdam, creating a significant trade route for green hydrogen.

ACWA Power, in collaboration with Zenith Energy Terminals, GasLog, and the Port of Amsterdam, has set the stage for a groundbreaking green hydrogen export corridor. This collaborative endeavor aims to unlock the potential of green hydrogen, which is heralded as the fuel of the future. The strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) exchanged between these organizations represents a leap towards a greener and more sustainable energy ecosystem.

ACWA Power, known for its leadership in energy transition and its commitment to green hydrogen, is the driving force behind this initiative. The company is currently involved in various green hydrogen projects worldwide, with a particular focus on its massive NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia. This project, powered entirely by renewable energy, is set to become the world’s largest utility-scale commercial facility of its kind. Additionally, ACWA Power is actively exploring green hydrogen projects and feasibility studies across different regions.

A significant part of the green hydrogen produced by ACWA Power will be allocated for export, with a specific emphasis on the European market. This approach aligns with the growing demand for clean energy and the European Union’s strong commitment to sustainable practices.

The partnership builds upon a previous agreement signed between Saudi Arabia and the Netherlands, which aims to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including clean hydrogen, marine transport technologies, standards, certification, and the establishment of efficient international supply chains. The Dutch government has allocated substantial funding for the development of green hydrogen production and distribution, indicating its strong support for these initiatives.

The Port of Amsterdam is a global energy hub, actively pursuing the development of green hydrogen capabilities. This aligns with its broader mission of embracing energy transition and becoming a gateway to Europe by establishing viable import corridors. The port’s focus on green hydrogen is a crucial part of its strategy to address the global decarbonization challenge.

Zenith Energy Terminals, a prominent operator of energy storage and distribution facilities in the Port of Amsterdam, plays a significant role in this initiative. The company is actively developing an open access liquid hydrogen import facility in Amsterdam, designed to provide hydrogen producers with access to Dutch and European hydrogen markets.

To facilitate the safe and efficient transportation of liquid hydrogen, Zenith Energy Terminals is collaborating with GasLog, a leading global provider of liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping services. Together, they are working on the development of specialized vessels capable of transporting liquid hydrogen from ACWA Power’s production sites to the Port of Amsterdam.

As part of the memorandum of understanding, the involved parties will conduct a detailed feasibility study to establish the green hydrogen trade corridor. Based on the study’s outcomes, they may proceed with a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to define roles and responsibilities. This project’s success could significantly contribute to the global energy transition and the growth of the green hydrogen market.
