Ukrhydroenergo and Andritz Hydro Join Forces on Ukraine’s Green Hydrogen

Ukraine’s Ukrhydroenergo and Andritz Hydro GmbH are set to sign a memorandum of cooperation focused on developing and implementing projects for the production of “green” hydrogen in Ukraine. This initiative aligns with global efforts to shift towards cleaner energy sources and reduce carbon emissions.

The announcement was made by Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal, during the sixth German-Ukrainian Economic Forum. Shmyhal emphasized the importance of this collaboration in advancing Ukraine’s commitment to green hydrogen production.

Shmyhal stated, “During the forum, we will sign a memorandum of cooperation between the Ukrainian company Ukrhydroenergo and Andritz Hydro GmbH on the development and implementation of projects for the production of ‘green’ hydrogen in Ukraine.”

The partnership between Ukrhydroenergo and Andritz Hydro signals a significant step towards harnessing the potential of green hydrogen, which is produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources. Green hydrogen is considered a key element in the global transition to clean energy.

Green hydrogen is produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity. It holds the promise of providing a clean, efficient, and versatile energy carrier. This form of hydrogen can be used in various sectors, including industry, transportation, and power generation, and it’s particularly vital in sectors where direct electrification is challenging.

Ukraine, with its abundant renewable energy resources, is well-positioned to become a significant player in the green hydrogen arena. The collaboration with Andritz Hydro, a leading global supplier of electromechanical equipment for hydropower plants, is a vital step in realizing this potential.

In addition to the hydrogen production projects, the cooperation between Ukrhydroenergo and Andritz Hydro includes plans for the supply of equipment for the construction of the third stage of the Dniester pumped storage power plant. This expansion involves launching three new hydroelectric units, which are expected to provide Ukraine with approximately 1 GW of additional power.

These additions to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure will not only enhance the country’s energy capacity but also contribute to its green transition. As the world moves towards reducing carbon emissions and embracing sustainable energy solutions, green hydrogen and renewable energy projects are becoming increasingly vital.
