In a move that underscores Brazil’s determination to be a key player in the global green energy arena, the Ceara state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GoVerde Energia and Apollo Asset.

The primary goal of this collaboration is to harness the power of renewable energy, specifically solar energy, and use it to produce green ammonia at the port of Pecem. This ambitious project is set to make a significant impact not only on Brazil’s energy landscape but on the global stage as well.

With an expected investment of BRL 3 billion (approximately USD 597.6 million or EUR 562 million), the project is slated to be implemented at the Pecem Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP). The Ceara state government envisions this complex becoming a vibrant green hydrogen hub in the near future.

Ricardo Junqueira, the New Business Director at GoVerde, estimates that the facility, once fully operational, will have the capacity to produce an impressive 40 tonnes of green ammonia per day during the initial phase of the project. As the project progresses, this production volume is set to increase to 250 tonnes in the second phase and another 200 tonnes in the third phase.

This venture aligns perfectly with Brazil’s growing commitment to clean and sustainable energy. With a wealth of renewable energy resources, including abundant sunlight, wind, and hydroelectric power in various regions, Latin America is well-positioned to emerge as a global powerhouse in the clean hydrogen sector. The region has already announced clean hydrogen roadmaps and witnessed a surge in projects, ranging from small-scale initiatives to large, ambitious endeavors.

The upcoming World Hydrogen Latin America conference, scheduled for December 12-14, 2023, is poised to be a vital platform for discussing the significant challenges and opportunities in the region’s hydrogen sector. Over 400 hydrogen experts and professionals are expected to gather at this event, where crucial topics will be explored, including policy and regulatory aspects, local demand generation, scaling up projects for export, hydrogen storage, and distribution strategies.

The event features a diverse lineup of over 100 industry expert speakers, including notable figures such as Paulo Emílio de Miranda, President of the Brazilian Hydrogen Association, Diego Pardow Lorenzo, Minister of Energy at the Ministry of Energy in Chile, and many more. These experts will delve into topics related to the growth and development of the hydrogen sector in Latin America.

The significance of World Hydrogen Latin America is evident in its wide-reaching focus, spanning from the southern cone of the continent to northern regions of Central America, including the Caribbean and Mexico. Attendees can look forward to insights from industry leaders, updates on the latest hydrogen projects, and the opportunity to connect with decision-makers, project developers, and public sector representatives.

The event also features interactive masterclass sessions, providing attendees with valuable knowledge on specific topics like investment risk reduction, hydrogen derivatives, and certification.

As Brazil and the broader Latin American region aim to lead the way in the clean hydrogen revolution, initiatives like the Pecem project in Ceara state demonstrate the commitment to a greener, more sustainable energy future.
