Chungbuk Province Pioneers Eco-Friendly Hydrogen Production

Chungbuk Province is set to become home to a cutting-edge carbon capture-type hydrogen production base in Gangnae-myeon, Cheongju-si, North Chungcheong Province, by the year 2025.

The ambitious project, marked by a collaborative business agreement signed by Chungbuk Province, Cheongju City, Chungbuk Techno Park, and private businesses, is positioned as a game-changer in the hydrogen industry.

The primary goal of this innovative project is to establish a clean hydrogen mass production system that significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional gray hydrogen production methods. By capturing carbon dioxide emitted during the hydrogen production process, the carbon capture-type facility aims to set new standards in environmentally friendly hydrogen production.

The technology at the heart of this hydrogen production base involves the capture of carbon dioxide produced during hydrogen production, transforming it into a sustainable and eco-friendly process. This carbon capture methodology not only enhances the environmental profile of hydrogen but also contributes to the production of additional products like dry ice.

With an anticipated production capacity of 3 tons of hydrogen per day starting from the second half of 2025, the project is set to make a significant impact on the hydrogen supply chain. Simultaneously, the production process is estimated to capture 24 tons of carbon dioxide per day, producing 19 tons of dry ice. This dual-benefit approach aligns with the global push for cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.

Cheongju City’s strategic relocation of the bus garage near the hydrogen production base aligns with the broader regional impact of stabilizing hydrogen prices. Establishing local production facilities is expected to mitigate transportation costs, making hydrogen more accessible and affordable in North Chungcheong Province.
