Sunfire Launches Future of Green Hydrogen in Dresden

Sunfire has officially started the construction of its research and development center in Dresden. With a hefty investment of around 30 million euros earmarked for the company’s headquarters, Sunfire is set to propel the development of cutting-edge electrolyzer prototypes, aiming to redefine the landscape of green hydrogen production.

Sunfire’s ambitious venture focuses on the development and testing of prototypes for new electrolyzers, with a strong emphasis on producing green hydrogen. This aligns with the overarching goal of contributing to the energy transition by providing a sustainable solution to reduce CO2 emissions in energy-intensive industries.

The heart of Sunfire’s R&D center lies in the innovation of electrolysis systems. These systems play a pivotal role in the production of green hydrogen by splitting water into its components—hydrogen and oxygen—using electricity. Notably, for the hydrogen to be deemed green, the electricity used in the process must be sourced entirely from renewable energies, such as solar and wind power.

The anticipated doubling of the workforce at the Dresden location, currently boasting around 400 employees, underscores the transformative potential of Sunfire’s initiative. The expansion aims to harness the top-trained talent pool, leverage a first-class research landscape, foster collaboration with strong industrial partners, and enjoy unwavering political support.

Sunfire’s venture received a significant financial boost at the end of August, with the federal government allocating a substantial 162 million euros for hydrogen production. The funding decision, presented by Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck and Saxony’s Economics Minister Martin Dulig, underscores the government’s commitment to fostering green hydrogen initiatives. Notably, the state of Saxony contributes 30 percent of the funding amount, solidifying the regional support for Sunfire’s groundbreaking efforts
