Spain’s €150M Push for Pioneering Hydrogen Initiatives

Spanish government is set to allocate 150 million euros from European Union funds to prominent hydrogen projects led by major energy corporations. This funding injection, part of the Incentive Program for Pioneering Renewable Hydrogen Projects (H2 Pioneers Program), underscores Spain’s commitment to advancing green hydrogen technologies.

The initiative is a vital component of the broader Strategic Project for the Recovery and Economic Transformation (Perte) focused on Renewable Energy, Renewable Hydrogen, and Storage (ERHA).

The primary objective of the H2 Pioneers Program is to identify and support innovative projects with commercial viability in the production and consumption of renewable hydrogen. With an allocation of 150 million euros, the program aims to accelerate the development of green hydrogen technologies in key sectors such as industry and transportation. This initiative aligns with Spain’s ambitious plan to allocate a total of 1,555 million euros to green hydrogen within the Perte ERHA framework, leveraging an additional 2,800 million euros of private capital.

The provisional resolution of the second call under the H2 Pioneers Program reveals the selection of 14 projects across eight autonomous communities. Noteworthy beneficiaries include projects in Aragón, Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, Navarra, the Basque Country, Catalonia, Galicia, and Castilla y León. Major energy companies such as Enel, Acciona, Petronor, EDP, and Air Liquide are among the driving forces behind these initiatives. The chosen projects encompass a range of technologies, reflecting the diversity of approaches in the pursuit of renewable hydrogen.

The funded projects are poised to make a substantial impact on Spain’s economic landscape, fostering industrial growth and technological innovation. The Valle Navarra projects by Acciona, the Caspe plant by Walia Energy and Capital Energy, GP H2 at AS Pontes by Universal Kraft, the H2OSSA plant in Montiel by Eftfuels Spain, and the green hydrogen project in La Zaida by Enel Green Power are among those receiving support, each with an allocation of 15 million euros. These ventures are expected to contribute significantly to Spain’s renewable energy goals and technological advancement.

Beyond the H2 Pioneers Program, the addendum to the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR) allocates 1,000 million euros for the industrial value chain of the transition. This significant boost is expected to further enhance hydrogen initiatives, leading to the creation of at least two hydrogen clusters and 25 value chain or pioneering hydrogen projects. The broader financial commitment underscores Spain’s dedication to becoming a leader in the global green hydrogen landscape.
