Green Energy Park and Solatio to Unveil Ambitious Green Hydrogen Project in Piauí

Green Energy Park and Solatio are set to inaugurate the cornerstone ceremony for one of the world’s largest green hydrogen projects on Friday.

The project, located in the Export Processing Zone (ZPE) of Piauí, near Parnaíba, is anticipated to revolutionize the green energy landscape and position Brazil as a global leader in sustainable hydrogen production.

Scheduled to commence operations in 2027, the first phase of the project aims to generate a staggering 20,000 megawatts (MW) of power, surpassing the entire installed capacity of the Itaipu Binacional hydroelectric plant. Subsequent phases are slated for operation by 2035, marking a significant stride toward sustainable energy independence.

Harnessing the abundant wind and solar energy resources along the coast of Piauí, the project is poised to emerge as a beacon of green innovation. Green hydrogen, lauded as the “fuel of the future,” particularly in its sustainable form, positions Brazil to take a leading role on the global stage.

Underlining the international significance of the venture, Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, pledged financial support to the megaproject in Piauí during the European Hydrogen Week in Brussels. The commitment is part of the Global Gateway initiative, which directs European Union investments in sustainable infrastructure projects globally.

The green hydrogen produced in Piauí is earmarked for export through the port of Luís Correia, adjacent to Parnaíba, destined for the port of Krk in Croatia. From there, it will supply industries in southeastern Europe, marking a critical step in establishing Brazil as a major player in the global green hydrogen market.

Beyond energy exports, Governor Rafael Fonteles envisions Piauí as an ideal location for industries producing green products like steel and fertilizers. The ripple effect of this project is expected to have far-reaching global repercussions from an environmental standpoint.

As Green Energy Park, with its Croatian roots, and Solatio, deeply rooted in Iberian heritage, collaborate on this ambitious endeavor, the venture signifies a monumental leap toward sustainable energy practices and the potential transformation of Brazil into a key player in the green hydrogen economy.
