ISTHY project, supported by the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region, the Industrial Revitalization Fund, and led by renewable energy and hydrogen producer Inthy, has formed a crucial partnership with Bureau Veritas. This collaboration aims to establish the first-ever hydrogen storage test site in Europe, addressing the critical need for ensuring the security of hydrogen storage.

The primary goal of the ISTHY project is to create a state-of-the-art testing and certification facility dedicated to hydrogen storage technologies. As hydrogen gains prominence as a clean fuel for mobility and industry, the safe storage of large quantities becomes paramount. By meeting regulatory requirements and conducting rigorous tests, ISTHY seeks to pave the way for widespread adoption of hydrogen in various sectors, including road, maritime, and rail mobility.

Hydrogen, a versatile and sustainable energy carrier, requires specialized storage solutions to mitigate safety risks. ISTHY aims to fill a crucial gap in the hydrogen ecosystem by providing facilities for development and certification testing of large quantity tanks, up to 1,400 liters, specifically designed for mobility applications. This endeavor will contribute to establishing standardized safety protocols and certifications for hydrogen storage technologies.

The successful realization of the ISTHY project holds the potential to be a game-changer for the hydrogen industry in Europe. As the first of its kind on the continent, ISTHY will not only address safety concerns but also foster innovation and accelerate the deployment of hydrogen solutions. The collaboration between Inthy and Bureau Veritas is expected to bolster France’s position as a key player in the global hydrogen landscape.

David CARLE, Managing Director of Bureau Veritas Exploitation, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the uniqueness and scale of the ISTHY project. He emphasized Bureau Veritas’ commitment to supporting the development of hydrogen in Europe, showcasing the establishment of a Center of Excellence dedicated to Hydrogen and Derivatives as a testament to this commitment.

Marie-Guite Dufay, President of the Burgundy-Franche-Comté Region, lauded the entry of Bureau Veritas into the ISTHY project, emphasizing its positive impact on the region’s status as a hub for hydrogen innovation in France. The project is anticipated to play a pivotal role in positioning the region as a key contributor to the hydrogen revolution.

As the ISTHY project gains momentum, it symbolizes a collaborative effort to shape the future of hydrogen storage, setting new standards for safety, innovation, and sustainability in the hydrogen landscape.
