Anglo American Platinum, BMW Group South Africa, and Sasol South Africa Limited have forged a collaboration agreement to introduce hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and establish supporting hydrogen refueling technology in South Africa.
The primary goal of this collaboration is to accelerate the adoption of FCEVs and bolster the development of hydrogen infrastructure across South Africa. By leveraging BMW’s expertise in FCEV technology, Sasol’s proficiency in hydrogen production, and Anglo American Platinum’s supply of platinum group metals (PGMs) crucial for FCEVs, the partners aim to pave the way for a sustainable mobility ecosystem. This initiative aligns with the South African government’s green hydrogen economy strategy, which aims to mitigate carbon emissions, attract investments, generate employment opportunities, and stimulate demand for critical metals.
Under the agreement, BMW will provide FCEVs, while Sasol will supply green hydrogen and mobile refueling solutions. These vehicles will undergo real-world testing to evaluate the performance of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, following extensive development efforts. Sasol’s expertise in hydrogen production, showcased by the successful operation of its Sasolburg facility, coupled with BMW’s cutting-edge FCEV drive system, heralds a new era of sustainable transportation in South Africa.
The collaboration holds immense potential to transform South Africa’s automotive industry and energy landscape. By fostering the adoption of hydrogen-fueled mobility solutions, the partners aim to reduce carbon emissions, stimulate economic growth through job creation and investment, and bolster demand for locally sourced materials such as PGMs. Furthermore, the initiative underscores South Africa’s commitment to combating climate change and transitioning towards a low-carbon future.
