thyssenkrupp Nucera Preferred Supplier for Green Hydrogen-to-Methanol Project in Tasmania

thyssenkrupp Nucera has been selected as the preferred electrolyser supplier for a groundbreaking green hydrogen-to-methanol project in Tasmania, Australia.

The Bell Bay Powerfuels project aims to harness the power of green hydrogen to produce methanol, a key component in the shipping industry. With a targeted production capacity of 300,000 tonnes of green methanol per year, the project seeks to address the growing demand for cleaner energy alternatives in maritime transportation. By leveraging renewable power sources such as hydro and wind, the project endeavors to decarbonize the shipping sector and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.

At the heart of the Bell Bay Powerfuels project lies cutting-edge electrolysis technology, pioneered by thyssenkrupp Nucera. The company’s alkaline electrolyser modules, known as Scalum-branded electrolysers, are poised to play a pivotal role in converting water into green hydrogen, a process that forms the cornerstone of sustainable methanol production. Additionally, thyssenkrupp Nucera is spearheading the commercialization of solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) technology in collaboration with Fraunhofer IKTS, opening new avenues for high-heat industrial applications and further advancing the transition towards clean energy solutions.

The adoption of green methanol as a fuel for the shipping industry holds immense potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the environmental impact of maritime transportation. By substituting conventional fossil fuels with green methanol derived from renewable sources, the Bell Bay Powerfuels project aims to enhance the sustainability and efficiency of global shipping operations, paving the way for a cleaner and greener maritime sector. This transition not only aligns with international sustainability goals but also positions Tasmania as a leader in renewable energy innovation and climate action.

The selection of thyssenkrupp Nucera as the preferred electrolyser supplier for the Bell Bay Powerfuels project underscores the company’s commitment to driving innovation and advancing clean energy technologies on a global scale. By leveraging its expertise and experience in electrolysis technology, thyssenkrupp Nucera aims to facilitate the transition towards a sustainable energy future while unlocking new economic opportunities and fostering job creation in Tasmania and beyond.
