Norwegian Hydrogen has set its sights on Tornio, Finland, as a prime location for green hydrogen production.
The establishment of Norwegian Hydrogen’s subsidiary, Vireon, in 2023 marked a significant step towards facilitating hydrogen refueling for heavy-duty transport across the Nordic region. With active involvement in developing hydrogen fueling infrastructure, Norwegian Hydrogen aims to spearhead sustainable development initiatives in the area.
Simen Skaare Eriksen, Chief Commercial Officer of Norwegian Hydrogen, emphasized the company’s commitment to fostering a sustainable society and bolstering economic vitality throughout the Nordic region. Tornio, with its robust industrial landscape and well-developed transport and energy infrastructure, emerged as a natural choice for Norwegian Hydrogen’s endeavors.
Petri Luoma, Project Director of Norwegian Hydrogen Finland, echoed this sentiment, highlighting Tornio’s alignment with the company’s strategic objectives. He emphasized the city’s conducive environment for hydrogen production, setting the stage for a mutually beneficial partnership.
Hannaleena Posti, Deputy CEO of Business Tornio, lauded Norwegian Hydrogen’s initiative, emphasizing its alignment with the region’s long-term efforts towards establishing a robust hydrogen economy. Tornio’s selection as a key player in Norwegian Hydrogen’s sustainability roadmap underscores the region’s potential as a catalyst for green innovation.
Norwegian Hydrogen’s commitment to green hydrogen extends beyond Finland. Collaborating with a consortium of partners, the company launched a groundbreaking project at the Port of Hirtshals in Denmark. This ambitious endeavor aims to develop an integrated green hydrogen value chain, featuring a 5 MW electrolyzer and a large-scale refueling station, poised to deliver substantial volumes of green hydrogen annually.
Additionally, Norwegian Hydrogen’s partnership with Australian Provaris Energy heralds the development of a large-scale production plant for green hydrogen in Ørskog, Norway. With a projected capacity of 270 MW and an annual production capacity of 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen, this initiative underscores Norwegian Hydrogen’s commitment to scaling up renewable energy infrastructure.
