Azerbaijan’s Minister of Energy, Parviz Shahbazov, highlighted the pivotal role of hydrogen in the country’s strategic partnership with the European Union, at the 2nd annual summit on green hydrogen in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Minister Shahbazov emphasized that hydrogen production and utilization stand as integral components of Azerbaijan’s commitment to the global green transition. The inclusion of hydrogen development in various strategic documents underscores the government’s long-term vision for embracing sustainable energy solutions.

Azerbaijan’s Main Strategy for socio-economic development prioritizes the hydrogen industry’s growth, aiming for both domestic use and export. The declaration of a green energy zone in recently liberated territories underscores the country’s ambitious plans to leverage hydrogen production for economic revitalization.

With significant wind energy potential estimated at 157 GW in the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan finds itself positioned for substantial energy production. While this capacity exceeds domestic demand, the country is exploring avenues for collaboration with European partners to harness this surplus for green hydrogen production and potential export.

Azerbaijan’s collaboration with European countries underscores its commitment to green hydrogen production leveraging wind energy resources. By fostering partnerships for technology transfer and market access, Azerbaijan aims to position itself as a key player in the emerging global hydrogen economy.

While Azerbaijan’s ambitions in the hydrogen sector are commendable, challenges such as infrastructure development, technology deployment, and market integration need to be addressed. Moreover, ensuring environmental sustainability and social inclusivity in hydrogen projects will be critical for long-term success.
