Black & Veatch Studies Commercialization of Green Hydrogen in Malaysia

Black & Veatch has embarked on an initiative to study the commercialization pathways for green hydrogen in Malaysia.

This project, commissioned by Malaysian energy giants Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and PETRONAS, aims to validate the findings of a joint feasibility study conducted by the two companies. The goal is to provide strategic, technical, and commercial insights on the generation, transportation, distribution, and demand for green hydrogen in Malaysia.

Malaysia’s Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR) outlines an ambitious vision for the country to become a major hydrogen exporter in the Asia Pacific region by 2050, with a projected revenue exceeding $85 billion. Black & Veatch’s involvement is pivotal in evaluating the feasibility and practicality of these goals. The company’s extensive experience, spanning 80 years in the hydrogen and ammonia production industries, positions it as a credible partner in this endeavor.

The feasibility study’s primary objective is to secure viable off-takers for green hydrogen, a critical factor influencing the bankability of hydrogen developments. According to Jerin Raj, Director for South & Southeast Asia at Black & Veatch, Malaysia’s abundant renewable resources, such as solar and hydropower, offer significant potential for green hydrogen production. The study aims to shape the development of Malaysia’s hydrogen economy over the next decade by assessing various commercialization pathways.

While Malaysia’s hydrogen roadmap is ambitious, it is essential to benchmark these plans against global standards and other regional initiatives. Countries like Japan and South Korea have already made significant strides in hydrogen technology and infrastructure. For Malaysia to become a key player in the hydrogen market, it must address several critical challenges, including the cost of production, technological advancements, and infrastructure development.

Black & Veatch’s extensive experience in the hydrogen sector is a considerable asset to this project. The company has a history of delivering innovative solutions across the hydrogen value chain, including the first hydrogen power generation conversion project and the first major hydrogen fueling station in the United States. This expertise is expected to provide valuable insights and practical solutions for Malaysia’s hydrogen ambitions.
