In an effort to push the boundaries of hydrogen technology, Germany has issued a new tender titled “Projekt Hydax – Hydrogen and Hydrides Distribution in Axial Cladding Direction,” published on May 30, 2024.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) is overseeing this initiative. Interested parties are required to submit their proposals by August 30, 2024.

The primary objective of Projekt Hydax is to explore innovative methods for distributing hydrogen and hydrides along the axial cladding direction of various materials. This exploration is crucial for enhancing the efficiency, safety, and reliability of hydrogen storage and transportation systems. Given the global push towards a hydrogen economy, advancements in this area could significantly reduce costs and improve the overall feasibility of hydrogen as a clean energy source.

The project requires comprehensive research and development services, alongside related consultancy expertise. Participants must demonstrate an understanding of both hydrogen and hydride behaviors within metal claddings and other composite materials. Proposals should outline new methodologies or improve existing ones for effective hydrogen and hydride distribution.

One of the tender’s core technical requirements is a focus on axial cladding direction, which is considered a pivotal aspect for enhancing material integrity and efficiency. Research should aim to mitigate issues such as hydrogen embrittlement and improve the overall durability of storage and transportation systems. Participants will need to offer innovative solutions that ensure hydrogen’s stable and safe passage through these claddings.

Proposals must include a detailed plan for experimental procedures, simulation models, and validation methods. Clear timelines, cost estimates, and potential impact assessments should also be part of the submission package.
