Sarawak’s Green Hydrogen Vision

Sarawak aims to become a world leader in the green hydrogen market, reaching beyond the borders of ASEAN and the Asia Pacific region.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasized this vision during his keynote speech at the Asia Pacific Petroleum Conference (APPEC) 2024 in Singapore. He highlighted Sarawak’s efforts in advancing its clean energy strategy through hybrid solar-wind and solar-hydro technologies.

Reducing Carbon Emissions

“These innovations complement our hydropower expansion and are pivotal in reducing carbon emissions across various sectors,” Abang Johari said. He stressed that these hybrid solutions, alongside Sarawak’s renewable energy initiatives, demonstrate their commitment to sustainable energy development and a low-carbon future.

Expanding Renewable Energy

Beyond hydrogen, Sarawak is advancing the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from microalgae. This move solidifies their role in providing sustainable energy solutions across various sectors. Abang Johari, who also serves as Sarawak’s Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, aims for the state to double its electricity capacity to 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and reach 15GW by 2035. These goals are part of a broader strategy to position Sarawak as a green energy powerhouse in ASEAN. Global partnerships and AI-driven research to optimize energy production and distribution are key to this.

Green Methanol and Ammonia Production

Sarawak is also expanding into green methanol production while focusing on ammonia production for urea fertilizer, which is crucial for soil fertility and food security. Other energy sources under exploration include converting coal plants to biomass and developing wave energy as part of its energy mix.

Collaborative Spirit

With the theme “Fueling Tomorrow’s Possibilities Together,” APPEC 2024, organized by S&P Global Commodity Insights, emphasizes collaboration and innovation. These elements are vital to overcoming challenges like climate change, unlocking progress, and promoting sustainability.
