U.S. Energy Storage Association reveals 100×30 vision for energy storage industry

The U.S. Energy Storage Association (ESA), the national trade association for the American energy storage industry, issued an expanded energy storage vision, 100×30: enabling a clean power transformation.

Aware of trends in energy storage and renewable energy markets and extrapolated to ESA’s 2017 vision document (35×25: A Vision for Energy Storage), this white paper maps the industry’s roadmap to install 100 GW of new storage across the United States over the next decade.

“The U.S. power sector is in the midst of transformation to a cleaner, more modern infrastructure. With the right policies and regulatory frameworks in place, we believe that achieving 100 GW of new storage installations by 2030 is entirely reasonable and attainable. Current market projections indicate remarkable growth for energy storage over the next decade, and its role is expanding to maintain and enhance the reliability, resilience, stability and affordability of electricity over the coming decade.”

Kelly Speakes-Backman, CEO of ESA.

The 100×30 paper outlines the road to 100 GW of new energy storage over the next decade, based on the extrapolation of the initial 35×25 study, expert forecasts and the effects of the rapid renewable energy transition of the U.S. power grid.

The new energy storage systems of 100 GW include batteries, thermal, hydraulic and pumped storage hydro. ESA forecasts that by 2030, 100 GW of storage deployment will create 200,000 jobs, approximately three times the current amount.

In order to meet the target of 100 GW of new energy storage by 2030, the study proposes a mix of enhanced policy support, such as the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for stand-alone storage facilities, as well as the continuation of existing policies to eliminate barriers to market participation.

The combination of a supportive policy environment and a thriving clean energy economy would drive growth in energy storage and set a new 100 GW storage trajectory, keeping the power system efficient, robust and affordable.
