Peru’s Ministry of Production has given the nod to the detailed environmental impact study for a $11.2 billion green hydrogen project, Horizonte de Verano, set to be constructed in Arequipa. This project signals Peru’s growing commitment to renewable energy, with the plant set to integrate water desalination and solar photovoltaic components to produce ammonia from green hydrogen.
Amidst a backdrop of rapid expansion in Peru’s renewable energy sector, this venture marks a pivotal step in establishing the nation as a formidable player in the global sustainable economy. Notably, the green hydrogen trajectory is complemented by other renewable endeavors, such as ACCIONA’s planned 225 MW photovoltaic plant in La Joya, Arequipa, aimed at producing 611 GWh of electricity annually across 549 hectares of land.
Challenges persist, as significant capital outlay and infrastructure setup are required to support green hydrogen’s commercial viability.
