Adani and Kowa: Partners in Green Hydrogen

Adani Enterprises has forged a 50:50 joint venture with Japan’s Kowa Company in Singapore. This landmark partnership aims to produce and market green ammonia, green hydrogen, and their derivatives marking a major stride in the global transition to clean energy.

The joint venture agreement outlines the establishment of a Singapore-based company responsible for the sales and distribution of green ammonia, green hydrogen, and related products manufactured and supplied by the Adani Group. This collaboration signifies a crucial step towards expanding the presence of green hydrogen and ammonia in the market.

Adani New Industries Ltd (ANIL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, is at the forefront of this green revolution. ANIL’s ambitious plan involves the production of green hydrogen and its downstream products like ammonia, urea, methanol, and ethanol at its Khavda and Mundra SEZ facilities in Gujarat, India.

The Khavda site, boasting a vast land bank spanning 71,000 acres, holds immense potential for large-scale renewable energy deployment, with a capacity of up to 20 GW, thanks to its abundant wind and solar resources. This makes it an ideal location for sustainable energy production.

To achieve its green hydrogen production goals, ANIL intends to utilize both alkaline and PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolysis processes. The target is to manufacture 2.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by the fiscal year 2031 at the Khavda facility.

One key factor driving this initiative is the company’s confidence in achieving a low cost of energy extraction. Company officials have stated that this efficiency will enable the production of hydrogen at an operating cost of just 30 cents per kilogram. This cost-effectiveness is a crucial factor in making green hydrogen a competitive and viable energy source.

The green hydrogen produced at Khavda will be transported to the Mundra Special Economic Zone (SEZ) through a 42-inch pipeline, a cost-effective mode of transportation. At the Mundra SEZ, this hydrogen will be used in the production of various downstream products, further enhancing the sustainability and versatility of this eco-friendly resource.
