Aker Clean Hydrogen, Kuehne+Nagel accelerate green container shipping

In a joint effort to decarbonize the maritime logistics sector through the use of green container transport, Aker Clean Hydrogen, a global integrated clean hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol producer, and Kuehne+Nagel, the world’s largest sea logistics provider, have partnered to offer green container transport. The two firms hope to broaden Kuehne+Nagel’s offering of environmentally friendly fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol in the future.

The first vessels equipped with engines that can run on these alternative fuels are already under production and are anticipated to enter service in 2024. The supply of these fuels will be a significant hurdle in the early stages of the development of such first-generation fossil-free engines. Both firms want to benefit from this collaboration by assisting in the scaling up of fossil-free shipping from the beginning. The booking of contracts for ecologically friendly containers is handled by Kuehne+Nagel in collaboration with their carrier partners, whilst Aker Clean Hydrogen will secure access to green fuels on a long-term basis.

It has already been established that Aker Clean Hydrogen and Kuehne+Nagel are in advanced conversations with container ship owners who share the goal of fossil-free shipping and who wish to convert to hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol engines. Clients of Kuehne+Nagel’s will be able to acquire the right quantity of green fuels for their cargo in the future through agreements with these carriers, allowing them to immediately reduce CO2 emissions throughout their supply chains.

According to Arne Faaberg, Managing Director of Kuehne + Nagel Norway, “The Mass-Balance-Concept is critical in the move away from fossil fuels and toward renewable fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia.” “This collaboration with Aker Clean Hydrogen complements to our overall commitment to a low-carbon business strategy, which we have stated previously. We will be able to deliver certified green container transportation as a result of our collaboration with them and our carrier partners “…..

“The shipping industry contributes for around 3% of total global emissions. In conjunction with our Mass-Balance-Concept and the green fuel generated by our planned hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol projects around the world, Kuehne+Nagel is well-positioned in the global shipping industry’s transition to a more environmentally friendly future “Knut Nyborg, Chief Executive Officer of Aker Clean Hydrogen, expressed his views.
