The Canadian province of Alberta is taking a bold step towards advancing clean energy solutions with the launch of two hydrogen funding competitions.

Using the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund, the government plans to support innovative hydrogen technologies across various sectors, including production, transmission, distribution, storage, and heavy-duty transportation, industrial heat, and chemicals. With a total of $25 million available through Alberta Innovates’ Hydrogen Centre of Excellence and Emissions Reduction Alberta, this funding is set to propel early-stage and later-stage technologies forward, shaping a sustainable and low-carbon future for the province.

Alberta’s hydrogen funding competitions aim to foster breakthrough innovations in hydrogen technology, enabling the deployment of cutting-edge solutions that are not yet commercially available. By supporting projects in different stages of development, the government seeks to drive progress across the entire hydrogen value chain, from production to utilization in various industries.

The funding competitions will accelerate the research and development of hydrogen technologies, encouraging advancements in areas such as hydrogen production, storage, transmission, and utilization. By investing in these innovations, Alberta aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote the widespread adoption of clean energy solutions.

Alberta’s funding initiatives have the potential to make a significant impact on the hydrogen economy, transforming the province into a hub for hydrogen technology development and deployment. By supporting early-stage innovations and later-stage technologies, Alberta will contribute to the growth of sustainable industries, cleaner transportation, and a greener energy landscape.

The competitions are open to a wide range of applicants, including technology developers, industry associations, research organizations, Indigenous groups, and municipalities. Uniting these diverse stakeholders under a common vision for hydrogen advancement will be essential for achieving successful outcomes.

With its TIER program, the Government of Alberta is demonstrating its commitment to driving clean energy solutions. By investing revenues from the industrial carbon price, the province aims to accelerate the development and adoption of innovative technologies that contribute to a more sustainable and lower-carbon future.

Alberta’s hydrogen funding competitions represent a crucial step towards a future powered by clean and sustainable energy. By nurturing hydrogen innovations and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, the province is on track to play a leading role in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
