Algeria has joined the African Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA), signaling a deeper commitment to renewable energy cooperation across the continent.

The announcement came during the Global African Hydrogen Summit in Windhoek, Namibia, where Algeria’s Ministry of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies confirmed the country’s membership. Officials described the move as both a “strong message of unity” and a key milestone in Algeria’s strategy to diversify its hydrocarbon-heavy economy.

Speaking at the summit, Algeria’s ambassador to Namibia, Abdelkrim Diaf, outlined the country’s emerging hydrogen roadmap. He highlighted pilot projects and partnerships intended to link Algeria’s abundant solar resources with new value chains in green hydrogen and derivatives. These initiatives complement existing plans to expand renewables’ share in the national power mix, which today remains dominated by natural gas.

AGHA, launched in 2022 and chaired by South Africa’s electricity and energy minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, brings together African governments aiming to coordinate policy and financing for large-scale hydrogen production. Members — including Egypt, Kenya, Mauritania, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa — are positioning the alliance as a forum for harmonizing standards, mobilizing investment, and building the infrastructure required to export hydrogen or use it domestically in fertilizers, refining, and heavy transport.

For Algeria, accession offers access to a network of governments and investors pursuing a continent-wide hydrogen market. It also aligns with domestic priorities to cut carbon intensity while capturing industrial opportunities from emerging clean technologies. The challenge will be translating strategic intent into bankable projects that compete globally on cost — a hurdle that has delayed hydrogen deployments elsewhere. By pairing its solar potential with AGHA’s collaborative platform, Algeria is betting on regional scale to help turn early studies into commercial assets.
