Algeria is taking a significant step in its energy transition strategy with the launch of the Taqathy+ initiative in collaboration with the European Union (EU).
A critical aspect of the Taqathy+ initiative is its focus on green hydrogen, a sector where Algeria is poised to leverage its abundant solar resources.
The partnership with the EU underscores mutual benefits, providing Algeria with technological support and investment while allowing European countries to secure a stable and sustainable energy supply. According to Eurostat, the EU currently imports over 55% of its energy needs, highlighting the strategic significance of securing renewable energy sources. However, the success of this partnership hinges on effectively navigating political considerations, as energy security and international collaboration can be contentious issues.
The Taqathy+ initiative also comes at a time when Algeria is striving to meet its ambitious renewable energy targets of 27% by 2030. Achieving such a target requires not only technological development but also policy reforms that support sustainable energy practices. This involves streamlining regulatory frameworks to attract foreign investment and ensuring that local ecosystems are developed to support renewable energy projects.
