Alkeymia Unveils €400M Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Project in Caspe, Zaragoza

With Spain targeting deep decarbonization of its industrial and transport sectors, Alkeymia’s €400 million green hydrogen and ammonia production plant in Caspe, Zaragoza, is set to become a major milestone in the country’s energy transition roadmap.

The project, officially presented to local stakeholders on May 8, 2025, is designed to produce 25,000 tons of green hydrogen and 165,000 tons of green ammonia annually—marking one of the most ambitious renewable hydrogen undertakings in the Aragon region to date.

Backed by €384 million in public funding under Spain’s Hydrogen Valleys initiative, the project has been designated of Regional Interest since October 2024, signaling the government’s strategic commitment to accelerating clean hydrogen infrastructure. Javier Martínez, Director General of Economic Policy for the Government of Aragon, emphasized the project’s significance during the Caspe presentation, underscoring its role in enhancing industrial competitiveness while aligning with Spain’s 2030 climate targets.

The facility will be constructed at the El Portal industrial estate in Caspe, with construction expected to start in 2026 and operations ramping up through 2028. Crucially, it will be connected to the Enagás Hydrogen Trunk Network through an 8-kilometer dedicated pipeline. This link ensures that the produced hydrogen can be efficiently delivered to downstream industrial consumers and transport hubs, reinforcing the region’s energy resilience and reducing dependence on fossil-based inputs.

Ammonia produced at the site will be distributed via rail, strengthening the region’s low-carbon logistics infrastructure. This dual-focus on hydrogen and ammonia—two molecules critical to decarbonizing heavy industry and fertilizer production—positions the Caspe plant as a cornerstone of both domestic energy strategy and potential export readiness.

During the construction phase, it will generate approximately 750 direct and indirect jobs, with an additional 60 direct operational jobs once the plant is fully online. These roles will be pivotal in establishing a regional green employment base, offering reskilling opportunities and bolstering public-private cooperation in the clean energy domain.
