In a move poised to stabilize the Texas energy network, Apex Clean Energy’s Great Kiskadee Storage facility has commenced operations.
Located in Hidalgo County, this 100 MW/200 MWh battery storage plant with a two-hour duration marks a significant advancement in energy storage capabilities. As the first asset under SA Grid Solutions—a joint venture newly established in 2024 by Apex, SK Gas, and SK eternix—its inception signifies both cooperation in clean energy strategies and progress in energy infrastructure expansion.
The facility is designed to absorb surplus electricity during periods of peak generation and discharge it when electricity demand surges, thus contributing to a more stable and reliable power supply system. This functionality is particularly critical given Texas’s frequent bouts with extreme weather conditions that often place stress on its power grid.
Crafted by Saber Power Services, Great Kiskadee Storage not only brings technological advancements but also economic benefits to the region. The facility is projected to generate over $12.6 million in tax revenue, enhancing local economic standing while contributing to statewide grid resilience. Additionally, the project incorporates measures to support environmental restoration, with committed grant funding aimed at rehabilitating 200 acres of the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. This ecological initiative will aid in preserving critical habitats for migratory birds and other wildlife species, aligning the project with broader sustainability objectives.
As the primary lead on the development, construction, and operational optimization of Great Kiskadee and subsequent projects, Apex is already steering its next endeavor—another facility mirroring Great Kiskadee’s capacity and duration.
