The Chambers of Commerce across the Atlantic Arch are actively pursuing the development of hydrogen technology in the Cantabrian corridor.

This region is strategically poised, with multiple ongoing hydrogen-related initiatives primarily focusing on infrastructure for storage and distribution. A notable assembly of chamber representatives from the Basque Country, Cantabria, and Galicia convened with members from Cantabrian valleys and clusters to assess the ongoing developments and critically evaluate how these Chambers might catalyze this opportunity within the energy sector for the territory.

This robust forum for reflection and cooperation, embracing participation from the 21 Chambers of Commerce spanning the Atlantic regions of Spain, Portugal, and France, is committed to fostering an area that is not just more competitive and sustainable, but also more dynamic, open, and interconnected. All these efforts aim at enhancing the region’s attractiveness and quality of life for its populace. Combining renewable energy sources with hydrogen positions the Cornish as a pivotal point for an energy paradigm shift, which underlines the formation of the Hydrogen Corridor Support Group by the Chambers.

The gathering in Bilbao included influential players from various parts of the energy sector, including the presidents from Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés, in addition to counterparts from Álava, Bilbao, Burgos, Cantabria, Gipuzkoa, Navarre, Torrelavega, and Vigo. Furthermore, stakeholders from hydrogen-related entities, energy companies, and academic representatives were present, indicating a broad coalition aimed at steering the hydrogen agenda forward.

The path forward requires a critical assessment of ongoing initiatives while fostering an environment conducive to technological innovation and market readiness. As the Atlantic region grapples with energy transformation, the participatory efforts of diverse stakeholders could well position the area as a cornerstone of Europe’s hydrogen economy.
