Atlas Copco, in partnership with KTS Trading Sdn Bhd, is presenting its advanced hydrogen compressors at the Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen (APGH) Conference & Exhibition, held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

Founded in 1873, Atlas Copco has been a leader in compressed air technology innovation. At the APGH 2024, Khalid Shaikh, Atlas Copco Malaysia and Singapore’s regional general manager, highlighted the critical role of green hydrogen in addressing climate change. “Climate change is a significant issue now, and many sceptics have been proven wrong; there are no more sceptics left as everyone acknowledges that climate change is happening right before our eyes,” Shaikh remarked.

He emphasized the importance of hydrogen in the global green transition and expressed enthusiasm about Sarawak’s initiatives to develop a hydrogen economy. Atlas Copco aims to play a significant role in this journey through ongoing collaborations with various stakeholders, focusing on mobility and hydrogen storage applications.

KTS Trading Sdn Bhd has been the exclusive distributor of Atlas Copco since 1983. Ling Leong King, Senior Manager of KTS Trading’s Industrial Products Division, highlighted the enduring and fruitful partnership between the two companies. “We officially began our cooperation with Atlas Copco back in 1983, and it has been a meaningful and strong partnership,” said Ling.

The partnership’s focus is now shifting towards green energy solutions, with hydrogen being at the forefront. “Globally, everyone is now looking at hydrogen as the fuel of the future. That’s why we are pushing it and want to be part of the green energy journey,” Ling added.

Abhijit Goswami, Atlas Copco’s Global Business Development Specialist for Hydrogen, elaborated on the company’s innovative compression solutions. Atlas Copco provides compression technologies for various gases, including hydrogen, achieving pressures of up to 950 bars—essential for filling high-pressure vehicles like buses.

Goswami noted the financial challenges of supporting the green hydrogen economy, emphasizing the need for modular and scalable approaches to increase economies of scale. “We believe that modularity and scalability will be key to success in the future. Therefore, we have implemented this approach in all our technologies, including hydrogen machines. By standardizing our machines as much as possible, we aim to help grow the hydrogen economy,” he explained.

The APGH 2024 exhibition features innovations from around 100 organizations, showcasing cutting-edge technologies and expertise in green hydrogen. Abhijit Goswami will also deliver a tech talk on Atlas Copco’s advanced compression solutions for green hydrogen, emphasizing their role in the sustainable energy landscape.

While Atlas Copco’s efforts in hydrogen compression technology are commendable, it is essential to contextualize these achievements within the broader industry benchmarks. The hydrogen sector faces numerous challenges, including high costs and infrastructure development hurdles. However, Atlas Copco’s focus on modularity and scalability aligns well with industry trends aiming to make hydrogen technologies more viable.

The partnership with KTS Trading and the push towards hydrogen reflects a growing recognition of the need for diverse energy solutions. However, the success of such initiatives will depend heavily on sustained investment and technological advancements that can bring down costs and improve efficiency.
