Edmonton-based hydrogen technology company, Aurora Hydrogen, is breaking new ground in clean hydrogen production via methane pyrolysis, contributing significantly to Canada’s growing low-carbon hydrogen industry.
Alongside industry frontrunners, Aurora Hydrogen is an active technical sponsor of the Open Hydrogen Initiative (OHI) – a collaborative led by GTI Energy, S&P Global Commodity Insights, and National Energy Technology Laboratory. The group aims to ensure increased transparency and credibility within hydrogen markets. Its activities include participating in key energy conferences.
OHI recently unveiled an open-source tool aimed at standardizing carbon intensity measurements in the global hydrogen sector. With an anticipated 170% surge in hydrogen supply to reach 256 million metric tons by 2050, according to S&P Global Commodity Insights, this standardized measurement tool becomes vital in leveraging hydrogen’s decarbonization potential. Aurora Hydrogen, being the only methane pyrolysis company within the OHI, has offered significant input into this toolkit to incorporate all feasible production methods and consider the carbon coproduct’s valorization.
Aurora Hydrogen’s unique methane pyrolysis process produces clean hydrogen at the point of use, thereby mitigating the need for hydrogen transportation or CO2 storage. The innovative method, first tested by scientists from the University of Toronto and the University of Alberta, leverages natural gas and microwaves to generate hydrogen and solid carbon, eliminating CO2 emissions altogether.
