The Australian Hydrogen Council (AHC) recently convened in Canberra for the second Parliamentary Friends of Hydrogen meeting, emphasizing significant developments in the country’s hydrogen sector.
The 2024/25 Federal Budget allocated substantial support to the hydrogen and derivatives industries, reflecting the government’s commitment to initiatives like Future Made in Australia, Hydrogen Headstart, and the Hydrogen Production Tax Credit. Minister for Climate Change and Energy, the Hon Chris Bowen MP, highlighted the importance of these policies in driving industry growth and achieving decarbonization goals. However, challenges remain in translating policy into actionable outcomes amidst short consultation periods and the need for rapid implementation.
The meeting featured a technology showcase, highlighting advancements across the hydrogen value chain, including hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and various technological innovations from companies like Energys, ENEOS, Innomotics, Star Scientific, Toyota, CarbonNet, Xodus, and Coregas. This demonstration underscores Australia’s capabilities in hydrogen technology development and its potential to contribute significantly to global hydrogen markets.
Leigh Kennedy, General Manager of Supply Chain and Industry Development at AHC, emphasized the impact of recent budget announcements, particularly the $1.7B funding for ARENA’s manufacturing innovation fund. This funding aims to bolster technological advancements and support SMEs transitioning into the hydrogen sector, aligning with broader economic recovery and clean technology initiatives under the National Reconstruction Fund.
The meeting also saw participation from strategic stakeholders including Australian Government agencies and international partners from Japan, Korea, and Germany. This highlights Australia’s efforts to strengthen international collaboration on hydrogen initiatives, crucial for expanding market opportunities and technological exchange.
