Smartenergy has gained approval to build a 200MW renewable hydrogen facility in Sardinia, Italy. The Porto Torres industrial complex in northeastern Sardinia will house the renewable hydrogen plant that was approved for development, building, and operation by the Sassari Provincial Industrial Consortium. According to a news release from Smartenergy, the facility will have a 200MW renewable hydrogen production capacity and be finished in three phases in 2030. In addition to the potential for a plant to create renewable methanol for export and e-fuels for the aviation and shipping sectors, the project is anticipated to provide a blend of renewable hydrogen…

The Western Australian government has hired ITM Power to examine the viability of producing electrolysers there. After soliciting businesses to submit bids for the project, the Western Australian Government chose ITM Power for the feasibility study, which will cost A$225,000 (€145,000). The state of Western Australia possesses 2.5 million square kilometers of low intensity terrain, a low population density, and “high-intensity renewable energy sources,” according to the Western Australia Renewable Hydrogen Strategy. In addition to use in industry (mining vehicles, combustion for heat, industrial feedstock), blending into the natural gas grid (10% blend minimum aim by 2040), and transportation, the…

In order to hasten the growth of the regional hydrogen industry, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and the State Government of South Australia signed a Statement of Cooperation. The following are some of the issues that MHI will suggest solutions for: expanding a globally competitive hydrogen export sector through the creation of a hydrogen export strategy and strategic partnerships; encouraging technological advancements and new business opportunities through research partnerships; undertaking projects that hasten the creation of extensive industrial decarbonization programs; and creating near-term Australian domestic markets through the creation of a hydrogen industry association. MHI Group seeks to support the state’s…

The decision to halt “project hydrogen” has been made by AQS and NSK. This occurs at a time when there is uncertainty over the effects of the resource rent taxation levied against fish producers. The blueprints for Norway’s largest hydrogen-powered service vessel are complete. The 24 meter long “AQS Hydro” would have taken the place of a vessel that used about 250,000 gallons of diesel per year. The ship’s design is predicated on the start of extensive hydrogen hub building along the Norwegian coast. The planned adaptations of existing vessels by Flatanger-based AQS have also been halted. For the conversion…

In the UK, a paper titled “Hydrogen Accelerators” was released last week in conjunction with the Conservative Party’s annual conference. It suggests hastening the use of hydrogen by utilities and industry. It was produced by a group named Hydrogen UK, which represents 50 significant enterprises in the sector. Major firms including BP, Shell, Equinor, and Centrica as well as gas network operators, appliance makers, and other businesses operating in the industry make up the organization. The report applauds the British Government for increasing the UK’s 2030 objective for low-carbon hydrogen production capacity from 5GW to 10GW but cautions that further…

Dutch Gasunie is investigating the feasibility of establishing an offshore hydrogen network in the North Sea with partners. The Netherlands has a significant climate target to meet in the area of hydrogen production. The Netherlands has set an ambitious target for hydrogen production: 4 gigatonnes by 2030. Internationally, the bar has been raised even higher. The Netherlands signed the Esbjerg Declaration with Denmark, Germany, and Belgium last summer, agreeing to develop the North Sea as a “green power plant.” They hope to generate 65 gigatonnes of offshore wind power by 2030, 20GW of which will be used to produce green…

The largest power-generating company in India, state-run NTPC, and Siemens have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to investigate the viability of co-firing hydrogen fuel with natural gas at NTPC’s 43 MW power plant in Faridabad, Haryana. This is the second MoU that NTPC has signed in less than a week to test such a procedure and technology with the intention of decarbonizing India’s electricity generation. A similar memorandum of understanding (MoU) was previously signed by NTPC and GE Gas Power to examine the viability of co-firing hydrogen with natural gas in GE’s 9E gas turbines installed at NTPC’s Kawas…

The American Petroleum Institute (API) recently published new research on the advantages of natural gas-derived low-carbon hydrogen. When hydrogen incentives are consistently offered based on a per ton of GHG emissions reduced, the study, which was commissioned by API and carried out by ICF, found that hydrogen produced from natural gas with carbon capture and produced from electricity and other energy sources could eliminate an additional 180 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on average per year through 2050 and save over $450 billion cumulatively through that time. According to an API review of the study’s findings, achieving…
