Bloom Energy, a leading distributed electricity generation company that manufactures solid oxide fuel cells, has launched an operating lease facility with Macquarie. The funds were used to build a 1.4 megawatt (MW) fuel cell microgrid that is supplying power to a California-based semiconductor component manufacturer. Macquarie structured a sale and leaseback to Bloom Energy as part of the deal, covering the majority of the system costs for the customer and allowing Bloom Energy to provide the customer with reliable, resilient, sustainable, and cost-competitive onsite electricity. The Bloom Energy microgrid allows this customer to dispatch independently from the grid, removing the…

A research team from the University of Alberta is collaborating with a Calgary energy company to extract hydrogen and high-demand carbon products from natural gas while emitting less CO2. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and the Mitacs Accelerate Grants Program awarded Innova Hydrogen and researchers in the Faculty of Engineering $1.2 million to develop the technology. Natural gas is heated to about 1,000 degrees Celsius in a reactor, where it is thermally decomposed into hydrogen and “carbon black,” a substance used in plastics, ink, and rubber products. However, the heat used in that process, which is typically generated…

Clean Vision Corporation has taken advantage of its previously announced option to license Kingsberry Fuel Cell Power’s hydrogen fuel cell technology. Kingsberry spent twelve years developing and patenting its hydrogen fuel cell power systems technology, which was largely funded by $10 million in federal and state research/infrastructure grants. The company has hired Kingsberry to design and build a five-kilowatt fuel cell prototype that will generate clean energy from hydrogen stored in the company’s wholly owned Clean-Seas (C-S) subsidiary’s pilot waste plastic-to-energy pyrolysis plant in Hyderabad, India. There, it will be demonstrated to potential clients such as India’s Ministry of Defense,…

Three players from completely different backgrounds have joined forces in the “Concrete Chemicals” project to make air travel possible even in a CO2-neutral world. CEMEX, a global cement company, ecoFT, a subsidiary of Sasol’s integrated chemical company, and ENERTRAG, a renewable energy company, are planning to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which will help the cement industry decarbonize. Cement and aviation are widely regarded as the most difficult industries in which to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By converting CO2 into SAF with the help of hydrogen, the international consortium paves the way for CO2-neutral cement production, allowing for CO2 reduction…
