A Romanian plan to use funds from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) totaling €149 million to subsidize the nation’s renewable hydrogen generation has been given the go light by the European Commission under EU State assistance laws. The move is meant to aid in the expansion of renewable hydrogen, which is in keeping with the goals of the EU Hydrogen Strategy and the EU Green Deal. The initiative will help achieve the goals of the REPowerEU Plan to hasten the green transition and lessen reliance on Russian fossil resources. After the Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF) was approved by…

The IMO claims to have made headway in formulating regulations for the use of hydrogen and ammonia as maritime fuel. A communication group will work on developing guidelines for both fuels and reporting back to the 2023 session of the Sub-Committee. It was reported by the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) that the IMO Working Group agreed that ammonia bunker rules should have a similar framework to the IGF Code as LNG does, but that ammonia had a significantly different risk profile. As the maritime sector strives to decarbonize its operations, hydrogen and ammonia have emerged as promising future marine…

An important new development has been reported by researchers: a two-electrode catalyst that uses just a single component to extract hydrogen and oxygen from water. Although such bi-functional catalysts have been tried before, they have often performed poorly in either the hydrogen or oxygen splitting processes. Combining the effects of two catalysts into one does work, but it comes at the expense of increased catalyst production costs. Using a nickel/molybdenum/nitrogen compound that had been modified with a small amount of iron and grown on nickel foam, researchers from the University of Houston, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Central…

The interest in Insplorion’s hydrogen-measuring technology has grown steadily during the past year. The hydrogen industry is in the midst of profound transformation, with massive expenditures predicted across the globe in order to reach ambitious sustainability targets. Hydrogen is an essential energy carrier in this endeavor and so plays a pivotal role. The Hydrogen Council, in conjunction with the strategy and consulting firm McKinsey & Company, estimates that by 2030, up to USD 500 billion will be invested in the hydrogen business field to support the many efforts already underway. The production of hydrogen will need to take place on…

In Zwolle’s Hessenpoort wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), the Drents Overijsselse Delta Water Board (WDODelta) is funding cutting-edge, novel studies of hydrogen and oxygen. With this solution in place, a business park can become energy independent while also relieving the local power grid. Recently, WDODelta undertook research into an alternative method of purifying waste water in conjunction with STOWA, the knowledge center for regional water management. Instead of the costly and inefficient aeration from the outside air, pure oxygen was injected into the aeration street, the beating heart of the sewage treatment facility. In order to install an electrolyser, the water…

Panama aspires to become a storage and commercialization node of green hydrogen, and the region of Latin America with the world’s greatest penetration of renewable energies in its electrical output is ripe for such a development. Panama is attempting to strike a balance between energy security, accessibility, and prices for its inhabitants throughout an energy transition that is “aligned” with the decarbonization objectives. For green hydrogen made in the Latin American region, Panama is planning to become a node or “storage, marketing, transformation hub.” As a “particularly essential channel for aiding decarbonisation,” green hydrogen has gained prominence in recent years.…

Frontier Energy is looking to hire an E&C firm in order to build the Stage One portion of its Bristol Springs, Western Australia, solar power project, which would have an installed capacity of 114 MW. The solar plant would supply electricity to a proposed 36.6MW electrolyser, which will generate 4.4 million kg of green hydrogen per year, and the company has selected two EPC bidders from a pool of five to work on the project. To move forward with project funding early in the new year, an EPC contract is essential. According to Frontier’s estimations, the total cost of Stage…

Yara Clean Ammonia, along with Hystar, Equinor, and Gassco, has joined the HyPilot initiative. Gassco plans to install a PEM electrolyser at the Krst Gas Processing Plant in Rogaland, Norway, in the second half of 2023. Green ammonia is of particular interest to Yara. The goal of the HyPilot project is to show that Hystar’s electrolysers can produce cheap, environmentally friendly hydrogen. The 1 MW containerized electrolyser will operate as part of the plan for a total of 10,000 operating hours. Information about its effectiveness for the companies can be gleaned from this. The Hystar electrolyser has a thinner membrane…

Tallgrass and Equinor, a Norwegian energy company, are working together to create large-scale, low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia projects in North America. To support broad decarbonization, the partners will analyze the production and market possibilities for hydrogen and ammonia, as well as the accompanying distribution infrastructure. Tallgrass and Equinor have agreed to do preliminary co-development activities, including as sponsoring a front-end engineering and design (FEED) research jointly. The research will concentrate on large-scale hydrogen production, which will include the collection of at least 95% of CO2 for permanent sequestration, as well as ammonia for efficient transportation and storage. Tallgrass and Equinor…

The European Commission has given the get-ahead for the funding of 5.2 billion in public aid, of which around 500 million would go to Italy as part of the second IPCEI on hydrogen, in which four Italian enterprises are taking part. Investments were presented by Next Chem-Maire Tecnimont, Rina-CSM, SardHy, and South Italy Green Hydrogen that aim to advance the state-of-the-art in hydrogen generation, storage, transportation, and distribution, as well as their practical applications. Aiming to increase the supply of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen and to permit development and first application of innovative and clean technologies for hydrogen in other…
