Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives (IEA) has finalized a $65 million wind farm construction contract in the state of Iowa. The contract was secured by White Construction, a subsidiary of IEA that manages utility-scale renewable energy and heavy civil infrastructure projects. The award is for the construction of a 150 MW wind farm in Northern Iowa that, upon its anticipated completion in November 2020, will produce roughly 600,000 megawatt-hours of electricity each year, or enough energy to power roughly 70,000 homes. White Construction will self-perform all of the engineering, procurement and construction needs of the project, including the building of access roads, the erection of wind generators, the installation…

Fred. Olsen Windcarrier has been hired by the Danish company Geo to supply a vessel for the preliminary geotechnical investigations for the Thor offshore wind project in the Danish North Sea. Fred. Olsen Windcarrier will utilize the Liftboat Jill to support Geo with the offshore borehole campaign. Jill will provide a stable platform for the campaign which is scheduled to start June 2020. The purpose of the assignment is to acquire geotechnical and geological information about the subsurface to be used as a basis for developers to assess the soil conditions for the Thor project. “We are very excited to…
ABB’s Power Grids has signed a five-year framework contract worth around $100 million with South America’s Interconexion Electrica (ISA). As the largest transmission system operator in South America, ISA is responsible for serving millions of people and businesses with electricity. Under the contract, ABB Power Grids will provide shunt reactor ensuring that the voltage stays within safe limits, avoiding possible blackouts. To protect the electrical network and help prevent power outages, the contract also includes the supply of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), air-insulated switchgear (AIS) equipment such as circuit breakers, instrument transformers and hybrid modules. “ABB Power Grids is shaping the…
Three new turbine developers have signed-up for the North Wales tidal stream energy project, Morlais. The companies joining the project are French Sabella and HydroQuest as well as Spanish developer Magallanes. All three companies aim to deploy their devices on a commercial scale at the Crown Estate-designated zone off the coast of Anglesey, North Wales. Morlais is run by social enterprise, Menter Môn and has the potential to become one of the largest tidal stream energy sites in the world. The first stage of the project, aims to secure consent for the development of the zone. The second stage will…
Aker Solutions and Cognite have received $2 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) for a NextWind Real Time Condition Monitoring project. The project is focused on next generation solutions in wind through digitalization and aims to develop a holistic digital solution that will enable monitoring the condition of an offshore floating wind farm and its impact on the environment via live data streaming. Aker Solutions, partnering with Cognite, was selected for the grant award as part of the California Energy Commission’s Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC). The program provides grants for companies applying research and projects designed to…
Parkwind, in a joint operation with MHI Vestas and Jan De Nul, has completed the final installation of turbines at the Northwester 2 offshore wind farm in Belgium. The 219 MW project is located in the Belgian North Sea, approximately 50km off the shore of Ostend, and is the first project to use the world’s highest rated V164-9.5 MW turbines in commercial operation. The installation works started in December 2019. To accelerate operations, a second installation vessel, the Scylla, was brought in mid-March to operate in parallel with Jan De Nul’s Vole au vent on the installation. Peter Caluwaerts, Parkwind’s…

ABB will provide electric propulsion, power, energy storage, control and automation technology for a first tug in South Asia capable of switching between low emission liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines and zero-emission battery power. The tug, which will operate in Singapore harbor, has been ordered by Sembcorp Marine subsidiary Jurong Marine Services for delivery from the Sembcorp Marine shipyard by the end of 2020. LNG as a fuel virtually eliminates sulphur oxide emissions, while the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is also incentivizing its use to support the International Maritime Organization’s aims to halve ship CO2 emissions by 2050. The…
Hellenic Cables has teamed up with Enel Green Power to ensure that 100 percent of its power supply needs in Greece come from renewable energy. The deal covers all of Hellenic Cables’ industrial facilities in Greece. This includes its submarine cables plant in Corinth and the high-voltage cables plant in Thiva. Enel Green Power guarantees the origin of renewable electricity through its portfolio in the country. This is another initiative by Hellenic Cables to minimize its environmental impact.
