The Australian Government through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) will jointly fund a new large-scale, grid-connected battery located in western Sydney. ARENA will provide up to $11.5 million in funding to TransGrid on behalf of the Australian Government to install a 50 MW / 75 MWh large-scale, grid-connected lithium ion battery at its Wallgrove substation in western Sydney. As part of their $75 million Emerging Energy Program, the NSW Government will also provide $10 million in support for the battery. Once completed, the $61.9 million Wallgrove Grid Battery, owned and operated by TransGrid, will provide the NSW transmission network…

GE Renewable Energy’s Haliade-X prototype, the world’s most powerful wind turbine operating to date, has been optimized and is now operating at a 13 MW power output. This prototype will undergo a series of tests during the following months to carry out various types of measurements and receive its type certificate in the coming months. Recently, the Haliade-X 13 MW, an improved version of the prototype that has been operating successfully in Rotterdam since November 2019, obtained its provisional type certificate and set a new world record by producing 288 MWh in a single day. This improved 13 MW version of…
X-ELIO has signed a landmark virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Salesforce, its first renewable energy offtake agreement in Australia. The VPPA in the Western Downs region of Queensland is a key achievement for X-ELIO in Australia and its 200 MW Blue Grass solar farm. For Salesforce, the VPPA supports the target of achieving 100 percent renewable energy by 2022. Under the deal, the Blue Grass project will include certificates for generation to meet Salesforce’s criteria for renewable energy. It is estimated that the MWs contracted under the VPPA will effectively displace 80,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions over the duration of…
JinkoSolar has signed a Module Supply Agreement for the Kozani project in the north of Greece, which has been developed by juwi Hellas Renewable Energy Sources. Construction of the solar park will begin in November 2021 and will use 204 MW of DuPont’s transparent bifacial Swan modules. “We are delighted that juwi Hellas, one of the most professional and experienced EPC company globally, has once again placed their trust in the superior quality and reliable performance of our solar modules for this impressive new project in Greece. The Kozani project will become Europe’s benchmark for renewable energy in terms of competitively…
EDP Renováveis (EDPR) has reached an agreement with Ellaktor, the largest infrastructure company in Greece, to jointly grow the country’s onshore wind potential, putting together and integrating industrial expertise and capacity for growth. The agreement envisages the joint development of a 900 MW wind portfolio, currently at various stages of development, in a country with attractive renewable prospects. Through this alliance, on top of the 152 MW already contracted in recent wind auctions to start operations in 2021 and 2022, EDPR gains access to quality assets under construction and gains more growth exposure in the Greek market.

Wärtsilä has been chosen by P&O Ferries (P&OF), the British ferry operator, to power their new ‘super ferries’ series. The contract relates to two vessels and the order was signed in Q1 2020. The Wärtsilä 31 engine will power the vessels. The high level of fuel efficiency of the engine also decreases exhaust emissions. P&OF has suggested that the new ships would be the most economical ships ever to navigate the English Channel, setting new standards for efficiency and cost-effectiveness. “We have worked closely with P&O Ferries and their naval architects on the design of these ships, and in their…
The Port of Kapellskär, along with the Port of Naantali, has received EU funding to minimize, among other things, air pollutant emissions from shipping. The funding also increases the investments made by the Stockholm Ports to meet customer service requirements and potential needs. The EU agreed to finance eight Swedish infrastructure projects with grants from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Fund this summer. Two of the projects are the Stockholm Ports initiatives to support a stronger Stockholm area. One of the agreements has now been signed with the intention of improving relations between the Port of Kapellskär (Sweden) and the…
ABB Marine & Ports’ new shore link technology ensures that Viking XPRS passenger ferry calls to Estonia’s Port of Tallinn are made in a quiet, effective and emission-free manner. The ferry, built in 2008, operates on a 2.5-hour route across the Baltic Sea between Tallinn, Estonia and Helsinki, Finland, which is usually docked twice a day in the Estonian region. ABB’s shore connection technology is designed for easy integration of all types of ships and is managed by the vessel itself, so that sequencing does not require the involvement of any shore-based personnel. Its sustainable in-harbor activity is highly valued…
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), 162.2 MW onshore wind farm, Bearkat II, successfully launched commercial operations and obtained tax equity financing in October 2020. Bearkat II is located in Glasscock County, Texas, and has been co-developed by Dallas-based developer Tri Global Energy. The project uses 47 V126-3.45 MW Vestas turbines that generate wind power to support the ERCOT power sector. Generated power is sold under a long-term offtake arrangement with a major U.S. financial institution, which limits the project’s exposure to underlying power prices. Construction of the Bearkat II project began in March 2019 and was successfully completed below budget despite…
