The US Department of Energy (DOE) has provided funding of $20 million for the development of photovoltaic solar perovskite technologies. Perovskites are a class of materials with a particular structure of crystals, named after the structure of the mineral. These have shown promise for high efficiency and low cost of production when used for producing solar cells. In order to be competitive on the marketplace, the long-term durability of perovskite needs to be checked and confirmed, the purpose of this announcement of funding potential through the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) of DOE. “Under this Administration, the…

One of the world’s largest offshore construction vessels has arrived at the site of the EDF Renewables and ESB owned Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) offshore wind farm, 15km off the Fife coast, as the project enters its first phase of offshore construction. The S7000, Saipem’s semi-submersible crane vessel, will start the installation of casings for piles. The vessel will also work on preparing the seabed before the steel foundation jackets on which the 54 wind turbine generators and two offshore substations will be installed. This giant vessel is 197.5 metres long and can work in the most challenging weather conditions.…

Showing the slow and stepwise growth that characterises the German wind market as it recovers from a historic low in 2019 due to a lack of permits, Vestas has received its second and final order for the 34 MW Dreieck Spreeau wind project, in Brandenburg, eastern Germany. The 8 MW order, placed by experienced project developer ABO Wind AG, comprises two V150-4.2 MW turbines and it follows an unannounced 25 MW order for the same wind park earlier this year. The project is Vestas’ largest with V150-4.2 MW turbines in Germany to date. Vestas worked closely with the customer to…

A photovoltaic system will be installed on the roof of the headquarters of Lausitz Energie Bergbau and Lausitz Energie Kraftwerke at Leagplatz 1 in Cottbus in the coming weeks. From August to September 2020, the solar panels will be installed on the roof surfaces of the first and third floors under the construction management of the EP New Energies (EPNE). The electricity generated by solar energy is used primarily to meet the needs of the LEAG building. If required, energy surpluses may be put into the public grid. “For us, the solar systems on our roofs are a further step…

Orbital Marine Power, Thompsons of Prudhoe and Port of Blyth, have decommissioned their prototype 2MW SR2000 floating tidal turbine. Heavy lift specialists Mammoet managed the tandem lift of the 516-tonne structure out of the water and onto the Blyth quayside in what was the port’s largest heavy lift to date. Orbital are reclaiming key components and elements of the turbine to carry out engineering inspections, with the rest of the structure to be dismantled for recycling and disposal. The unit was towed from Orkney to the Northumberland facility by Leask Marine using the C-Odyssey vessel. The final phase of the…
