Ballard Power Systems made a minority equity investment in Quantron AG, a global electric vehicle integrator and developing specialist OEM, to speed fuel cell truck adoption.

Under the provisions of the Joint Development Agreement, the investment funds provided by Ballard will be utilized by Quantron to advance the development of their truck fuel cell vehicle platforms as part of a financing round of up to 50 million euros. Quantron has chosen Ballard as its exclusive fuel cell provider for these systems.

Quantron, as part of the strategic agreement, has agreed to purchase 140 FCmoveTM modules with a combined output of roughly 17MW, with an additional 50 units available for purchase. The modules for the fuel cells should arrive in 2023 and 2024.

Quantron’s zero-emission fuel cell electric vehicle platforms will use Ballard’s fuel cell products for a variety of truck uses across the pond and stateside. Quantron’s new 44T fuel cell truck will make its debut at IAA Transportation 2022 in Germany, the company’s primary target market.

Because of the strategic nature of its investment, Ballard will be able to elect a member to serve on Quantron’s Board of Directors.
