BEEAH Pioneers Waste-to-Hydrogen Technology in Sharjah

BEEAH is embarking on an ambitious project to establish the Middle East’s first commercial-scale waste-to-hydrogen plant in Al Sajaa, Sharjah.

This venture, conducted with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and technological partners Chinook Hydrogen of the UK and Air Water of Japan, seeks to pave the way for innovations in emissions-free energy and hydrogen-based transportation.

The plant will incorporate Chinook Hydrogen’s patented RODECS gasification and pyrolysis methods alongside Air Water’s advanced hydrogen refinement techniques. The plant will process various organic materials, including Municipal Solid Waste, to produce fuel-cell grade hydrogen. With an annual production target of 2,560 tons, starting Q2 2027, the facility aims to generate 7 tons of green hydrogen each day. Notably, this process intends to divert significant quantities of waste from landfills while mitigating around 30,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

Beyond hydrogen, the plant will yield valuable by-products such as biogenic carbon dioxide, aiding alternative fuel production, and nitrogen, vital for industrial uses. The innovative technology received initial trials at a demonstration plant in Nottingham, UK, showcased at COP28 UAE, underscoring its practical viability. Eng Sharif Al Olama from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure emphasized the project’s alignment with the UAE’s goals of energy diversification and curbing reliance on fossil fuels.

The plant leverages technology accredited with a readiness level suitable for operational environments. Post-completion of the initial phase, BEEAH and partners plan to enhance the facility’s capacity to 20 tons of green hydrogen daily. Khaled Al Huraimel, CEO of BEEAH, highlighted the plant’s role in battling emissions by promoting green fuels and boosting hard-to-recycle waste diversion, thus contributing to the UAE’s net-zero objectives and leadership in hydrogen technologies.
