Bord na Móna, an Irish utility company, has unveiled its ambitious plans to establish the first green hydrogen production plant in Ireland.

The 2MW pilot plant, located in Mount Lucas, Co. Offaly, aims to contribute to the decarbonization of the transport sector by generating 200,000kg of green hydrogen annually. With construction slated to begin next year and operations expected to commence in 2025, this project marks a significant step forward in Ireland’s transition to sustainable energy sources.

Green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources, has emerged as a key solution in combating climate change and reducing carbon emissions. Bord na Móna’s green hydrogen production plant will harness renewable energy to generate hydrogen, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels. By utilizing this green hydrogen to decarbonize the transport sector, Ireland aims to make substantial progress towards achieving its climate goals.

The establishment of the green hydrogen production plant aligns with Ireland’s commitment to transitioning to a sustainable energy future. The utilization of renewable energy sources for hydrogen production not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also enhances energy security by diversifying the country’s energy mix. By spearheading this project, Bord na Móna aims to demonstrate the viability and potential of green hydrogen as a crucial component of Ireland’s energy transition strategy.

The development of the green hydrogen sector presents significant economic potential for Ireland. As countries worldwide seek to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, the demand for green hydrogen and related technologies is expected to grow exponentially. By establishing a green hydrogen production plant, Ireland can position itself as a leader in this emerging industry, attracting investment and fostering job creation in the renewable energy sector.
