Hycamite TCD Technologies has launched Europe’s largest methane-splitting plant in Kokkola, Finland. The new Customer Sample Facility (CSF) will eventually produce 2,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen and 6,000 tonnes of high-quality carbon annually. When liquefied natural gas (LNG) is used, the facility can cut up to 18,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. With biomethane, hydrogen production even becomes carbon-negative.

According to CEO Laura Rahikka, the CSF demonstrates the commercial viability of Hycamite’s methane-splitting technology, with plans to expand to other global locations. This process breaks down methane into hydrogen and carbon without emitting greenhouse gases, requiring just 13% of the energy compared to traditional electrolysis. The facility’s proximity to Hycamite’s headquarters in Kokkola Industrial Park (KIP) places it within northern Europe’s largest ecosystem for the inorganic chemical industry.

Hycamite’s carbon capture technology converts the carbon into valuable industrial products like graphite, which is used in batteries. The company offers scalable solutions tailored to customer needs, helping them reduce emissions while ensuring sustainable catalysts that can be recycled and produced from industrial by-products.
