Cepsa and the public firm Aguas y Servicios del Campo de Gibraltar (Arcgisa) of the Association of Municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar have signed a pioneering deal to supply the San Roque Energy Park with recycled water from Los Barrios and San Roque.
Cepsa will invest 3,000 million euros to create the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, Europe’s largest green hydrogen project, in its Energy Parks in Huelva and San Roque. One of Spain’s first circular economy projects uses municipal water for industrial usage, which the EU says can reduce world drinking water use by 5%.
The Commonwealth of Municipalities and Arcgisa plan to establish a wastewater treatment facility (EDAR) near the Energy Park on land Cepsa ceded to the San Roque City Council years ago to treat and purify municipal water for industrial use. This new facility will treat 4.2 million cubic meters of wastewater per year, which Cepsa will reuse. This is the annual water consumption of over 21,000 four-person families.
The San Roque Energy Park’s new water treatment plant will recycle up to 20% of industrial facilities’ water for reuse next year as part of its water reduction efforts. In its transformation plan, Cepsa aims to reduce fresh water collection in water-stressed areas by 20% globally by 2025 compared to 2019.
One of the most ambitious energy industry commitments worldwide, this will save over three million cubic meters of fresh water per year. The Water Table, a firm working group that evaluates water management in its activities, established the goal to find and assess ideas and programs that make better use of this resource. This internal interdisciplinary committee will help Cepsa raise water efficiency in all its businesses, especially in water-stressed areas, and improve awareness of the water cycle in its vast production facilities to increase recycled and reused water.
