Chile launches new green hydrogen action plan

The consultation process for Chile’s green hydrogen action plan has begun, and it will be in charge of the country’s short-term goal to expand the nascent industry.

The national strategy for green hydrogen, released in late 2020, aspires to make the country a world-class exporter of fuel by 2040. The action plan is anticipated to include the low-level, specific implementation of aspects of that policy.

The energy minister Diego Pardow said during a presentation on Tuesday that the report’s expected topics include how Chile will manage its current port infrastructure to handle hydrogen, what public works the State must carry out to unlock development potential, how to prepare cities and towns that may become production hubs and the procedure for drafting an education and training plan to produce skilled workers for employment in the new industry.

“In light of these inquiries, we believe it is essential to hear all viewpoints, come to a decision, and produce a proposal that enables this to be a country-level effort. For us, green hydrogen is a state policy rather than a government policy “explained Pardow.

The previous government of President Sebastián Piera introduced Chile’s green hydrogen strategy, which adopts a comprehensive action plan to promote green hydrogen production while attempting to take use of Chile’s low-cost renewable energy-producing potential.

In order to encourage local acceptance and later an export market, the government committed to funding, amending rules, promoting research and development, and encouraging both public and private sector entities to include green hydrogen into current frameworks. Prior to 2050, the ultimate goal is to manufacture green hydrogen at the lowest cost possible.

During this year, there will be public consultations on the revised action plan, and the final version is anticipated to be approved in August.
