The first train to run solely on green hydrogen will be introduced in Chile by the railroad business Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia (FCAB).

The Chilean company, which bought the green train from a Chinese vendor, anticipates having the new convoy operating by the second half of 2024. This will mark the start of the conversion of its present fleet, which is still powered by diesel.

FCAB, a company based in the northern Antofagasta region, primarily transports materials for Chile’s robust mining sector, which is the top copper producer in the world.

Chile aspires to grow its green hydrogen business and become one of the top exporters of this clean energy, which will be used by more and more sectors of the economy to replace dirty fuels.
