ClassNK approves J-DeEP floating offshore hydrogen plant

ClassNK has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to Japan Offshore Design & Engineering Platform Technology & Engineering Research Association (J-DeEP) for the design of a floating offshore hydrogen production plant.

J-floating DeEP’s offshore hydrogen production plant combines a seawater desalination system and an electrolysis system for extracting hydrogen from water. Using excess electricity from an offshore wind turbine, the plant is able to produce green hydrogen that emits no CO2 during the manufacturing process.

J-DeEP has been working on a feasibility study of the project to install the plant near offshore wind farms off the coast of Scotland in collaboration with Scottish Development International. The plant’s technical verification and preliminary feasibility study for commercialization have been selected as one of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry’s “Feasibility studies for the overseas deployment of high-quality energy infrastructure” for 2021.

ClassNK evaluated the plant’s design by J-DeEP for safety. ClassNK issued AiP after confirming that the design met the relevant requirements.
