Clean energy and hydrogen power plant future of Ast of Arvedi

The hydroelectric energy at zero kilometer and the hydrogen plant will be two qualifying points of the program agreement for Ast.

They will be discussed after the break for the Easter holidays when Mise will convene the parties involved in drawing up the agreement: company, category organizations, local and regional institutions. The energy factor is one of the key words of Arvedi’s new course at Acciaierie di Terni. On the other hand the history of the industry in Viale Brin has always been linked to the energy produced by the Marmore Falls.

It is known, in fact, that the iron and steel industries are energy-intensive and gasivorous industries with high consumption in this sense. The managing director of Ast, Mario Caldonazzo, in an interview to Repubblica has stated that the program agreement, according to the expectations of the group, will have to combine “industrial development and sustainability, infrastructural and social aspects” so as to identify “a solution to supply Ast with energy from renewable sources, hydroelectric, for the production of green hydrogen”.

An unavoidable prerequisite, according to Caldonazzo, to complete the decarbonisation process of the Terni industrial site in synergy with the projects of the Region and the Municipality. At a time like the present, being emancipated from foreign gas supplies can make the difference.

The new hydrogen plant will not only make the company in Viale Brin more competitive, but, as Ast has repeatedly stated, it will be at the service of the community. Today the energy produced by the Marmore Falls is not enough.

Ast and all the hydrogen valley of Terni would need five times more. And just in this direction the project of the hydrogen plant moves on which the Region aims a lot also through the funds of the Pnrr. But to find the right solution it will be necessary to find an agreement with Enel.

“The industrial dimensions of Ast – clarifies the mayor, Leonardo Latini – impose consequent choices. There is a historical link between Acciaierie and hydroelectric energy to which the project of the hydrogen plant must be connected. The Municipality – assures – will do its part, within the program agreement, to guarantee the best conditions that offer competitive advantages to a company that has already demonstrated to have a solid position on the market”.
