Colas, a major player in infrastructure solutions, clinches a pivotal contract for the comprehensive design and construction of a hydrogen production, storage, and distribution unit in Dunkirk.

Dubbed “Système Hydrogène pour la Mobilité Electrique du Dunkerquois” (SHYMED), the project is spearheaded by Hynamics, an EDF Group subsidiary, in collaboration with the Communauté Urbaine de Dunkerque and the Caisse des dépôts et Consignations.

The SHYMED initiative aims to establish a hydrogen ecosystem that supports electric mobility in Dunkirk. In its initial phase until 2025, the production unit will boast a capacity of 1.25 MW, powering ten hydrogen-fueled buses and waste collection vehicles near the Centre de Valorisation Energétique de Dunkerque. This forward-looking project is anticipated to curtail emissions, preventing approximately 1,137 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere each year.

Colas, recognized for its expertise in infrastructure and sustainable solutions, secures a pivotal role in the SHYMED project. As the turnkey contractor, Colas will oversee the design, hydrogen network activities, and the supply of critical equipment, with a focus on electrolysis, compression, and vehicle fuelling. The company’s foray into the hydrogen sector positions it as a key player in the burgeoning market for turnkey hydrogen solutions, aligning with the imperatives of a decarbonized world.

Hervé Le Joliff, Chairman of Colas Rail, comments, “This first reference enables the Colas Group to position itself as a supplier of turnkey hydrogen solutions for its customers, in a promising new market that meets the challenges of a decarbonized world.”

The SHYMED project not only underscores Dunkirk’s commitment to sustainable transit but also signifies a broader shift toward hydrogen-powered mobility solutions. Colas, with its turnkey capabilities, plays a crucial role in steering Dunkirk toward a greener future, where clean and efficient hydrogen becomes the driving force behind the region’s public transportation and waste management fleets.

As Dunkirk embraces a future powered by hydrogen, Colas stands as a trailblazer in the decarbonization journey, contributing to the transformation of urban mobility and setting a benchmark for eco-friendly infrastructure solutions.
