The Croatian government’s decision to allocate 15 million euro towards INA’s hydrogen project marks a significant step in Europe’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
This investment is part of the 45.5 million euro initiative designed to transform the country’s transportation sector into a sustainable model through green hydrogen production. According to the economy ministry, the grant aligns with the overarching goals of the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, aiming to accelerate the adoption of alternative fuels for decarbonization. At the core of this project is the installation of a 10 MW electrolyzer in INA’s Rijeka refinery.
This infrastructure is expected to produce up to 4,000 kg of green hydrogen daily, thereby spearheading Croatia’s entry into the hydrogen economy. Complementing this effort is the installation of an 11 MW solar power facility, which is critical for supporting the electrolyzer’s operations, effectively reducing dependence on non-renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the project entails developing a hydrogen storage and distribution network, essential for ensuring the efficiency and reliability of hydrogen as a transportation fuel. INA plans to make green hydrogen available across ten filling stations throughout Croatia, ensuring wider accessibility and fostering the transition to cleaner energy.
The involvement of Hungarian energy group MOL, INA’s largest stakeholder, adds another layer of strategic importance as they previously announced plans to expand green hydrogen production within the Rijeka refinery. This initiative represents a substantial collaboration in the Adriatic region’s first major green hydrogen attempt. In addition, the procurement partnership with Ohmium International signifies a noteworthy international collaboration, which could accelerate project deployment and operational excellence.
