In the US, Cummins will start manufacturing electrolyzers. Production of electrolyzers will begin in Fridley, Minnesota, with an annual manufacturing capacity of 500 megawatts (MW), and it will eventually be scalable to 1 gigawatt (GW).

Producing electrolyzers will take up 89,000 square feet of Cummins’ current Fridley factory. The plant will first produce its proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, the HyLYZER-500 and HyLYZER-5000, with the possibility of producing other electrolyzer products in the future. This selection of products may meet the power requirements of both modest and substantial hydrogen generation projects, ranging from 1.25 MW to more than 200 MW.

Hydrogen and oxygen are separated from water using an electrolyzer. The hydrogen produced by the electrolyzer system is “green” and carbon-free when it is powered by renewable electricity sources like solar, wind, or hydropower. This green hydrogen can be utilized as an energy-dense, clean power source to assist decarbonize a number of challenging industries, including heavy-duty transportation and industrial processes. It can be kept as a compressed gas or a liquid.

Cummins’ decision to locate its first U.S. electrolyzer manufacturing facility in Fridley demonstrates its long-term commitment to the larger Twin Cities region and the welcoming business environment there. The company is committed to giving back to the community in a number of ways, including through its Cummins Advocating for Racial Equity (CARE) program and support for Black-owned businesses and mobile grocery markets in the greater Minneapolis area, in addition to deepening its physical roots in Fridley.
